New to Cuban food, or looking for a taste of home? Here's a plain-English guide to the dishes on Capri's menu — from ropa vieja and vaca frita to maduros, tostones and café cubano — with prices from our 2026 menu.
"Old clothes" — beef braised until it shreds, then simmered in a tomato sofrito with peppers and onions. Often called Cuba's national dish.
"Fried cow" — shredded beef seared until crispy, finished with garlic, onions and a squeeze of citrus.
A thin, marinated steak grilled fast and smothered in onions.
Ground beef simmered in sofrito, classically with olives — savory Cuban comfort food.
Eye of round braised low and slow, sliced and served in its sauce.
"Fired-up tail" — oxtail braised in a rich, peppery tomato sauce until it falls off the bone.
Pork marinated in mojo criollo — sour orange, garlic and oregano — and roasted until tender. Capri also offers a whole roast pig for parties.
Seasoned pork chunks fried until crisp outside and juicy inside.
Chicken cooked right into seasoned yellow rice. Capri serves it with black beans.
A tomato-based braise with potatoes — try it with chicken (postas) or pork ribs (costillas).
Shrimp simmered in a tomato-and-pepper Creole sauce. Prefer garlic? Order them al ajillo.
Salt cod stewed with tomatoes, peppers and onions — a Spanish-Cuban classic.
A whole snapper fried crisp and served on the bone.
Rice cooked together with beans (you'll also hear "moros"). It comes standard with Capri entrées.
Ripe plantains fried until soft and caramelized — the sweet side to a savory plate.
Green plantains smashed and fried twice for a crunchy, salty side.
Tender cassava dressed in garlicky citrus mojo. At Capri it comes with fried pork chicharrón.
Creamy ham croquettes, breaded and fried — a staple of the Cuban bakery counter.
Seasoned corn masa cooked in the husk. Order it "preparado" with ham, pork and cheese.
Strong, sweet espresso with a layer of sugar foam (espumita). Sip it fast.
Cuban espresso cut with an equal splash of steamed milk.
A big cup of hot milk and Cuban espresso. Pair it with buttered tostada — more in our Cuban coffee guide.
Entrées come with congrí (or white or yellow rice), beans and one side, so a plate of ropa vieja arrives as a full meal. First time? You can't go wrong with a Cuban sandwich or a ropa vieja plate, and a cafecito to finish.
Our Menu Infantil has a kid-size palomilla steak, chicken nuggets and ham croquetas, each with fries. See everything on the full menu.
Ropa vieja — shredded beef simmered in a tomato-based sofrito with peppers and onions — is widely considered Cuba's national dish. At Capri it comes with congrí (or white or yellow rice), beans and a side.
Usually not. Cuban cooking is built on garlic, onion, cumin, oregano and sour orange rather than hot chiles. Even "enchilado" dishes like camarones enchilados are more savory than spicy.
Both are rice cooked together with beans. Traditionally congrí is made with red beans and moros y cristianos with black beans, but many Cuban restaurants in South Florida use the names interchangeably.
Start with a Cuban sandwich or a ropa vieja plate, add sweet maduros on the side, and finish with a cafecito or café con leche. For something crispy, try vaca frita or masas de puerco.
