Pressed Cubanos, Ropa Vieja and Café con Leche: The Capri Classics West Palm Beach Has Loved Since 1986
Pull up a stool at the counter and you'll hear it before you taste it: the hiss of a sandwich press, the clink of a demitasse, somebody's abuela asking for her café con leche "bien calientico." That's been the soundtrack at Capri Bakery & Restaurant since February 13, 1986, when the Alfonso family opened the doors on Southern Blvd and started feeding West Palm Beach the Cuban food they grew up on.
Nearly forty years later, the recipes haven't changed. Neither has the welcome.
The Classics That Built Capri
Every Cuban kitchen has its anchors, the dishes you measure a place by. At Capri, these are the ones regulars order without looking at the menu.
The Cubano, Pressed the Right Way
A real Cubano isn't a deli sandwich with ham. It's roast pork, sweet ham, Swiss, mustard and pickles layered on Cuban bread, then pressed until the crust crackles and the cheese pulls.
Our Capri Cubano Supremo is the full version, served with french fries or tostones. Prefer the sweet-bread cousin? Order the Media Noche. First time trying one? Start with the classic Cubano Regular and see why it earned its reputation. More on the pressed sandwich tradition over on our [Cuban sandwich page](/cuban-sandwich-west-palm-beach/).
Ropa Vieja That Tastes Like Home
Ropa vieja (shredded beef in a slow-cooked tomato sofrito) is one of those dishes that tells you right away whether a kitchen knows what it's doing. Ours comes with congrí (black beans and rice cooked together), a side of your choice, and enough sauce to spoon over everything.
Other carnes worth knowing: vaca frita (crispy shredded beef with onion and lime), palomilla steak, and picadillo a la criolla with olives and potatoes.
Café con Leche at Dawn
The doors open at 5:30 AM, and the first customers are usually there for one thing: a café con leche and a piece of buttered Cuban toast. Steamed milk, strong Cuban espresso, a little sugar stirred in at the counter. It's the way West Palm Beach has started the morning for decades. If you're new to it, our [Cuban coffee guide](/cuban-coffee-west-palm-beach/) walks you through the cafecito, the cortadito and the café con leche.
