Lunch breaks go fast, but that's no reason to settle for another sad desk salad. A Cuban lunch is filling and full of flavor, and it usually ends with a cafecito that gets you through the afternoon.
Capri has fed West Palm Beach's lunch crowd from Southern Blvd since 1986. Here's what to order, depending on how much time you have.
Short on Time? Get a Cuban Sandwich
A pressed sandwich is the fastest way to a real Cuban lunch, and it's easy to eat on the go. We make more than a dozen. Start with these:
- Cubano: roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and yellow mustard on Cuban bread, pressed until the crust is crisp and the cheese melts. Hungry? The Capri Cubano Supremo comes with fries or tostones.
- Media noche: the same fillings as a Cubano on a softer, slightly sweet egg bread.
- Pan con bistec: thin, seasoned steak on Cuban bread. Order the Bistec Supremo if you want ham on it too.
- Croqueta preparada: a Cuban sandwich with creamy ham croquetas pressed right inside. A South Florida favorite.
- Frita cubana: two Cuban-style mini burgers, served with fries.
Can't decide? Our guide to Cuban sandwiches walks through them all.
Got an Hour? Sit Down for a Plate
If you can take a real lunch break, order a plate. Here are a few to try:
- Arroz amarillo con pollo: chicken cooked with yellow rice, served with black beans.
- Vaca frita: shredded beef fried until crispy with garlic and onions, finished with a squeeze of lemon.
- Picadillo a la criolla: seasoned ground beef simmered in a tomato sofrito.
- Masas de puerco fritas: seasoned pork chunks fried crisp on the outside and tender inside.
- Bistec de palomilla encebollado: a thin grilled steak topped with onions.
Beef plates come with congrí (or white or yellow rice), beans and one side, so you won't need to order anything else.
Want Something Lighter?
- Soup: sopa de pollo (chicken soup) or a bowl of black beans, in regular or large.
- Salad: a mixed green salad, homemade tuna salad or pollo salteado (sautéed chicken).
- Capri-Mex: tacos, burritos or a quesadilla with beef, chicken or pork, plus Capri fish tacos.
Don't Skip the Cafecito
The Cuban cure for the 2 p.m. slump is a cafecito, a small, strong shot of Cuban espresso. Want something milder? Try a cortadito (espresso with steamed milk) or a café con leche. For something without caffeine, get a batido, a Cuban-style shake in flavors like mamey, mango and papaya, or a guarapo, which is sugarcane juice. Learn more about Cuban coffee at Capri.
Order Ahead and Skip the Wait
When your break is tight, order online or call (561) 655-1602 before you leave, and spend your lunch eating instead of waiting.
